We’re proud to see Halifax included in the Guardian’s UK Town of Culture nomination article, recognising the depth, quality and distinctiveness of culture right here in Calderdale.
From world-class venues like The Piece Hall and Dean Clough, to grassroots music spaces, independent creativity and the landscapes and stories that continue to inspire artists, writers and filmmakers, Halifax has a cultural identity that’s grown from the ground up and is deeply rooted in place.
Cllr Jane Scullion, Leader of Calderdale Council, said:
“As an administration, we have been clear that culture matters not just for who we are, but for how our communities thrive. This recognition reflects the creativity and talent across Calderdale, and the value of backing culture as a driver of pride, opportunity and regeneration.”
Cllr Danielle Durrans, Cabinet Member for Public Services and Communities, added:
“We have seen first-hand the difference culture can make when it’s taken seriously and supported properly. Through CultureDale, this administration chose to invest in communities, creativity and access because culture improves wellbeing, strengthens belonging and brings people together. Being recognised as the UK’s first Town of Culture would be a powerful springboard, helping us attract investment, support local artists and venues, and ensure culture continues to benefit every part of Calderdale.”
Recognition as the ‘first UK Town of Culture’ would shine a national spotlight on Halifax and Calderdale, boosting the local economy, creating jobs and opportunities, and reinforcing our belief that culture is not an optional extra it’s central to building strong, confident communities.
Halifax doesn’t need comparisons. It has a cultural story all of its own and under this Labour administration, we’ll keep backing the people and places that make it thrive.
