Last week in Calderdale we celebrated Takeover Day, a day where Calderdale councillors and officers had their roles ‘taken over’ by our brilliant looked-after children and care-experienced young people.
As corporate parents, this is one of the most important days in our calendar. It’s an opportunity to build relationships, raise aspirations, and show our commitment to giving our young people meaningful chances to lead, shape decisions, and be heard.
And this isn’t a one-sided offer. We gain so much from the day too, fresh ideas, honest insight, and a clearer understanding of the experiences that should guide all our work all year round.
Throughout the day, young people were given the opportunity to explore a wide range of roles across the Council.
For some, it helped them rule out paths they now know aren’t for them. For others, the hands-on experience sparked new questions, ideas and excitement about possible future careers and the opportunities didn’t end there some of the young people have already expressed interest in further involvement, including work experience within the local authority.
Leader of the Council Cllr Jane Scullion, who opened the event, said: “Our young people bring talent, insight and courage. Today is about listening, learning and making sure you all get the best out of the day, and for the adults its a valuable opportunity to listen as their voices can help shape the future of Calderdale, to our young people remember to look to the stars as that’s where your aspirations can take you”
Adam Wilkinson – Councillor for Sowerby Bridge , Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said:
“As corporate parents, Takeover Day reminds us of our responsibility to champion, support and create opportunities for every child in our care. And we learn just as much from them as they do from us.”
Leah Webster- A Community Voice for Ryburn , Chair of the Children and Young People Scrutiny Board, added: “Takeover Day is a powerful reminder that our young people are leaders in their own right. Their ideas drive change, and we are proud to stand alongside them and grateful for this opportunity they give us too.”
